chapter 2
...and so it starts
The 1st recording was undertaken on a porta-studio in Marks' lounge, Rods' shop and the local village hall. It came out on tape only under the title 'Excuse Me Madam Is This Yours?' They did a couple of gigs and then Rod, Moggy and Danny left. "Oh Bugger" said Mark and Les. But all was not lost, Les knew more people. Paul Fleetwood-Shinn was press-ganged into playing drums, Brian Woodsford appeared with his bodhran and a very big smile, David Lambert said "I'll give it a bash", on mandolin, but there was no bass player.
An advert was placed in the Free Ads and an answer duly arrived from Cormac O'Prey. "He must be taking the piss!" thought our heroes, but no, that was his name and he did play bass. Maggot were rolling again.
Another recording was undertaken, once again on tape only. It was recorded in a scout hut and engineered by a strange character called Tony Soffe. The title on this recording was 'Get Off The Gas Stove Granny You 're Too Old To Ride The Range'. It was rough to say the least. It was the beginning of 1995. Let the gigging commence in earnest.
A little later that year it appeared that Maggot had a little record company interest. "Go into a proper studio and record me a decent demo CD." said the lady in charge. So off they went, taking Mr Soffe with them to play various instruments. Two days and four songs later 'My Home Town' was finished. By the time the recording, printing, CD reproduction and other sundries were completed the band had forked out just over £1000 and the woman from the record company had disappeared. "BOLLOCKS!" was the shout. The gigs continued with Tony as a permanent member. A little later Cormac departs and Moggy reappears on bass.
