I've been digging this ditch since seven on monday
Just to get my weekly wage
Now my hands are blistered, my back is aching
And i feel about twice my age
So when that foreman hands me my paycheck
I'm gonna get me some light relief
There's a little place down by the border
That you just won't believe

*I'm going down, down, down
To where that welcome light keeps shining
Through the wind and rain and snow
At miss heavenlys' house of homegrown harlots
That's where i'll lay my bones

Now i don't need no-one at home
To cook and clean and moan
I'll eat at the diner, i'll clean when i wanna
And i ain't ever alone
Because if those bluescome and take a hold on me
I just slip inside my truck
Put my foot to the metal and head out to the place
That's sure to change my luck

Now there's rosalie
Who's arms are always open
There's claudette
Who'll tempt you with a smile
There's clara, laura and sarah-lee
Just waiting at the end of those dusty miles

Now i've known them and they've known me
For many, many years
I've taken time in their tender charms
And i've never shed a tear
Cos when miss heavenly puts a beer in my hand
And turns those lights down low
There's no other place in this whole damn world
Where i ccould rest my bones
